An engine pumping a long arc of water from a pond during dry hydrant testing
Testing dry hydrants, October 2026

Where there are no hydrants

Much of the district is rural, without water mains. There, crews draft water from ponds and streams through dry hydrants: pipes set into the water that an engine can connect to. Crews test them so they work when they’re needed.

District tenders carry thousands of gallons each to keep water flowing at fires away from hydrants. See the apparatus.
